Dr. Zachary Laksman Bio

Dr. Zachary Laksman completed both his Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Toronto. He trained as a specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Western University (formerly University of Western Ontario). Subsequently, Dr. Laksman pursued his Master's thesis and defended in 2015 under the supervision of Drs. Peter Backx and Gordon Keller from the University of Toronto. Recruited to UBC in 2016, Dr. Zachary Laksman is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor with expertise in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the UBC Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, and a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Heart Lung Innovation. He is also the Director of the St. Paul’s Hospital Atrial Fibrillation Clinic and the Director of the St. Paul’s Hospital Inherited Arrhythmia Clinic. Dr. Laksman is the recipient of the UBC Dr. Charles Kerr Distinguished Scholar in Cardiovascular Genetics and the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Health Professional Investigator Award. An element of Dr. Laksman’s work involves using a stem cell model and growing heart cells in a dish. In doing so, Dr. Laksman’s laboratory can model an individual patient’s specific disease, apply medicines to it, and study the cause of the disease and the effect of treatment.

A normal heart contracts and relaxes to a regular beat, but if you have atrial fibrillation, the atria (upper chambers) beat out of sync with the ventricles (lower chambers).

During a coronary angioplasty, a thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into an artery, typically in the groin or wrist, and guided to the blocked or narrowed coronary artery. The catheter is equipped with a deflated balloon at its tip. Once the catheter reaches the target area, the balloon is inflated, which compresses the plaque against the artery walls and widens the artery, restoring blood flow.

In many cases, the angioplasty procedure is followed by the placement of a stent. A stent is a small, mesh-like metal tube that is inserted into the artery  of the heart after the balloon is inflated. The stent helps to keep the artery open and prevents it from re-narrowing. There are two main types of stents: bare-metal stents and drug-eluting stents. Drug-eluting stents are coated with medications that help reduce the risk of the artery re-narrowing.

Coronary angioplasty is typically performed under local anesthesia, and the patient is awake during the procedure. It is considered a minimally invasive procedure and has become a common treatment option for coronary artery disease. It can relieve symptoms such as chest pain (angina) and improve blood flow to the heart, thereby reducing the risk of heart attacks and other complications associated with CAD.     My whole family is followed by Dr. Laksman and the team in the inherited arrhythmia clinic. We are so thankful to have a clinic like this in British Columbia.     I had an atrial fibrillation ablation with Dr Laksman 4 years ago and have had zero problems since. From the time my referral was received To my last follow up I received the greatest care. Patient, detail oriented, and the best surgeon in Vancouver. Cannot thank Dr Laksman and his whole team at St Paul’s and the atrial fibrillation clinic enough!
