Featuring Dr. Egidius Stockenstrom MD, FRCPC

Duration: 1 minute, 17 seconds

Snoring is caused by a vibration of the soft palate and the uvula due to obstruction of the upper airway.

The most common causes of snoring are nasal congestion, relaxation of the throat muscles through drugs and alcohol, accumulation of fat around the throat, mispositioning of the jaw, or plain and simply just sleeping on your back.

Sleep apnea can have a severe effect on your daily functioning as well as your overall health. There are various treatments available for snoring ranging from nasal strips to dental devices all the way through to laser surgery of the palate.

It is recommended that you consult with your health care provider to determine the correct snoring treatments for your particular problem.

If you have questions about snoring, contact a local physician or sleep specialist.
