Pregnancy Physio - Trimester Exercise Guide Duration: 1 minute, 58 seconds

Basic trimester guidelines for exercise in pregnancy are really important to follow.

In the first trimester, if you previously were not active, you definitely want to consult your doctor. If you were active, you can keep up the program that you were previously engaged in.

You do want to monitor your rate of perceived exertion, which is can you talk and exercise comfortably? In the second trimester, it's important to note that the baby does leave the protection of the pelvis, so therefore, if you are engaged in any sports such as soccer, skiing, ice hockey, you want to avoid these sports because of potential for any pelvic or abdominal trauma.

And then in the third trimester, it's important to again be consulting with your doctor on your exercise intensity, ensuring that you're staying within your rate of perceived exertion, and that you're not over-exhausting yourself and ensuring that you're remaining hydrated through your exercise program.

They do say that 30 to 60 minutes a day of moderate day is sufficient. The second and third trimester are important times; second trimester being the beginning when the baby is coming out of the protection of the pelvis. So you want to ensure that you're not engaging in any contact sports.

The third trimester is when the baby generally becomes heavier, you're getting more fatigued, and it may be important for you to be off your feet for a period of time. Therefore, certain exercises such as running, you may notice you may not be able to do anymore. Therefore, you may want to try swimming, elliptical, stationary bike, or just gentle, moderate walking.

Remember, before you begin any exercise program it's important to consult with your physician and exercise specialist.
