"Samantha Allen is the author of the horror-comedy novel Patricia Wants to Cuddle (Zando, 2022) and the Lambda Literary Award finalist Real Queer America: LGBT Stories from Red States (Little, Brown, 2019), a travelogue that the New York Times Book Review called “a powerful book of memoir and reportage.” Real Queer America won the Judy Turner Prize for Community Service at the Decatur Book Festival. Samantha's other publications include M to (WT)F (Audible Originals, 2020) and Love & Estrogen (Amazon Original Stories, 2018). Samantha has discussed her books on MSNBC's Morning Joe and C-SPAN's “Book TV,” as well as several radio programs and podcasts. Samantha is also a GLAAD-Award winning journalist and editor, previously covering LGBTQ+ stories as a senior reporter for The Daily Beast and as a staff writer for Fusion. Her writing has been published by The New York Times, Rolling Stone, CNN, and more. In 2018, she received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Digital Journalism Article, and she was nominated in the same category in both 2019 and 2020. In 2021, she won two awards from NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists: Excellence in Political Coverage and a shared award for Excellence in Business Coverage. Samantha has discussed her reporting on MSNBC, CNN, and NPR's On the Media. Samantha also holds a Ph.D. in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies with a certificate in Psychoanalytic Studies from Emory University, where she received a George W. Woodruff Fellowship. In 2013, she received the John Money Fellowship for Scholars of Sexology from the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University in Bloomington. When not working on her next book, Samantha co-hosts the You Should See The Other Guy podcast. She lives in Seattle and has two hairless cats."

One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.

The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.

Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.

Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.

With this treatment, your naturopathic doctor can also infuse vitamins directly into your blood stream. Vitamins such as B6 and B12 will help decrease the nauseous feeling as well as increase energy throughout your pregnancy. Again, it depends on the patient. And we often will design very specific treatment plans in terms of supplements and dietary change to help with these symptoms.  Lab tests, of course, play a big role in diagnosing digestive issues. So, we would look at systemic levels of inflammation.
