"Melanie Kusznireckyj (BSc, ND) trained as a naturopathic doctor in Toronto from an accredited college after completing her bachelors in Biology with focus on Botany, Plant Physiology, and Ecology at the University of Ottawa. She graduated from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, where she also worked at the Queen West and HIV Sherbourne medical clinics. She currently runs a small private practice in Montreal, and has extended her care-giving to other communities here in Montreal such as SIDA Benevole and to Street Suds, a community of homeless individuals transitioning to work. She is the VP of the Quebec Association of Naturopathic Medicine and is currently a member of the International Society for Complimentary Medicine Research (IN-CAM), the Reseau quebecois d'Action pour la sante des femmes (RQASF), and the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors (CAND). ? ? ? Melanie has research experience working in plant medicines in the department of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto under the mentorship of Dr Heather Boon, and was also part of large-scale epidemiology study (INTERPHONE) by the World Health Organization at the McLaughlin Centre for Population Health Risk Assessment at the University of Ottawa, investigating the effects of cell phones and brain tumor risk. Prior to her studies, Melanie was a professional contemporary dancer. She has volunteered in Nicaragua with Natural Doctors International as a student, and, after completing her studies in naturopathic medicine, she was a research assistant and resident with the esteemed Andre Saine, where she learned and gained experience in acute and chronic applications of classical homeopathy. Melanie's practice style combines evidence based practice, with the concepts discovered in ancient traditional medicines, such as the theory of life force or vitalism that emerged out of the 19th century, to better weave both philosophical concepts of healing with research. ? One of the most common conditions women experience during their first trimester of their pregnancy is nausea and vomiting and although it is quite normal, it can cause women a lot of stress and fatigue as well as a loss of a lot of nutrients and fluids.

The cause isn’t fully understood. However, it’s mainly due to the increase – the exponential increase of hormones experienced during this time, mainly HCG, estrogen, and progesterone. These hormones have effects on all other cells in the body as well which can cause some of these gastrointestinal symptoms women feel.

Although nausea can be very frustrating and tiring for women, there are a lot of treatment options to help. Simple things like changing your diet and your lifestyle can make a huge impact, like having regular exercise or ensuring that there’s always food in your stomach. Having an empty stomach can actually make the nauseating symptoms much more severe. So keeping a snack in your purse or in your car will help alleviate some of these symptoms.

Dehydration is common in women with increased nausea and vomiting so it’s really important to find ways to replenish fluid in the body. If you’re not able to keep water down or have trouble taking in water, intravenous vitamin therapy is a great alternative.
