We’re very fortunate that in this day and age, we have many new medications with less side effects. Fixed-dose combination medications mean that there are more than one medication in the bottle that you’re using. This is important to you, because instead of using drops one at a time with a five-minute interval, you can put both medications in at the same time.

Another advantage of using combination drops is that we can lower your pressure much more rapidly. And that is important, because the lower the pressure, the less likely your glaucoma is going to get worse.

Some of the newer treatment options include micro invasive glaucoma surgery. These are surgeries which allow you, the patient, to recover much quicker. Often we’ll insert small little stents which measure less than a millimeter, or make implants that will make your eye more comfortable as opposed to traditional glaucoma surgery. Make sure to discuss these options with your ophthalmologist.

Often, just being diagnosed with glaucoma can create a lot of anxiety, and many of our patients also are quite depressed. It’s important to seek out help and support groups, and discuss this with your ophthalmologist or optometrist. One should not feel alone in this disease, and there are many treatment options that are available. And often will stop the disease progression, and make sure you can have a healthy lifestyle and maintain seeing the good things in life that you enjoy seeing.

If you have questions or concerns, make sure you contact your ophthalmologist or optometrist.
