Dr. Lau brings 9 years of foot and ankle injury experience to his position as the Medical Director, WSIB Foot and Ankle Specialty Program provided leadership to the WSIB Foot and Ankle Specialty Program since it’s inception in 2004. After graduating in 1994 in medicine from the University of Toronto, Dr. Johnny Lau completed his orthopaedic training in Toronto and during this time completed a Masters Science Degree with an interest Foot and Ankle Biomechanics. A seven-year residency in orthopaedics at the University of Toronto provided a wealth of valuable experience. From there, Dr. Lau went to Baltimore, Maryland for a one-year Clinical Fellowship in Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Surgery at Union Memorial Hospital. Dr. Lau, cross-appointed to the University of Toronto as Assistant Professor in orthopaedic surgery, sub specializes in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, sports and arthroscopic foot and ankle surgery, foot and ankle arthritis surgery (including ankle replacements and joint transplants), rheumatoid foot and ankle reconstruction and diabetic foot infection and ulcers. Dr. Lau’s research interest is in the treatment of foot and ankle arthritis. He is studying joint replacements for foot and ankle arthritis and is involved in developing a new ankle replacement. Dr. Lau is involved in a national study evaluating ankle replacements, and is spear heading a study to evaluate toe replacements. Dr. Lau receives research funding from the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, University of Toronto, and Physician Services Incorporated. He is the immediate past President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society, and actively participates in committees for the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. Dr. Lau is currently the Chair of the Ankle Arthritis Working Group for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, and will be leading an international group of surgeons to develop guidelines for treating ankle arthritis.

    The problem is that he offloads his clients to a physiotherapist (Tamara Gotal) who exhibits agist and misogynistic behaviors. She never mentioned her title (unlike nurses). He did nothing at all. In and out within 2 minutes. And of course he refused to treat me. Toronto Western has degraded significantly in quality of care and etiquette. Please don't waste your time here. If I could afford it I would choose exclusively private health care.

    Had to wait 2 years to see dr Lau . What a disappointment! He said he could fix inflammation in foot and that I couldn't wear high heels anymore . My life has never been the same . Continuous pain since 2015. His office staff , Barbara nevers smile . Had to report her to administration before I could get sick note for work .
