It's crucial to continue receiving vaccinations throughout life to protect against infectious diseases that haven't been eradicated and to maintain immunity against those for which immunity wanes over time.

The emergence of antibiotic resistance has indeed made the treatment of certain infections more challenging. Vaccination plays a critical role in preventing infections in the first place, reducing the need for antibiotics and helping to curb the development of antibiotic resistance.

Some vaccines, like the tetanus vaccine, require booster shots because the immunity they provide gradually decreases over time. By staying up to date with such vaccinations, adults can ensure they maintain optimal protection against preventable diseases.

Moreover, adult immunization has broader benefits beyond personal protection. By getting vaccinated, healthy adults contribute to the concept of herd immunity. This means that when a significant portion of the population is immune to a disease, it creates a protective barrier that helps prevent its spread and protects those who are most vulnerable, such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

It's important to have open and regular discussions about immunization with primary healthcare providers. They can provide guidance on the appropriate vaccines and schedules based on individual health status, age, occupation, travel plans, and other relevant factors. By staying proactive and getting vaccinated as adults, we can collectively reduce the burden of infectious diseases and help protect ourselves and others.

My husband and I are patients of Dr Johan Wannenburg since the past two years and did not have a choice in choosing another doctor as being accepted as a patient is difficult in West Kelowna. We moved to Kelowna BC from Ontario where our doctor was a part of a Health Team. He/She was fantastic and would keep track of our on coming check ups. We brought all our medical records with us and handed them over to the medical assistants to be entered into their system for doctor to view when required . However we are not sure what information was kept in our file but the paper records were destroyed . Doctor Wannenburg does not seem to find any previous history on us and depends on us giving him a run down. This wastes appointment time and he rushes through. Lately we found several slip ups by the ladies at the front desk. Medical reports were not picked up from the fax machine and we had to request additional copies. Also doctor sent me for a blood test due to pain in my joints. He did not discuss my problem but just wrote out a prescription for some tablets. I have been calling to find out about my blood test results but I am being told that doctor will call if he finds it necessary. I feel that if I really want to know my test results I will have to make an appointment. I am saying this based on the fact that he may not even realized that he had sent me for a test unless his assistant informs him that he needs to look at it. Sorry but everyone there is terribly busy and when it is time to close they just scoot off, everything is forgotten the next day. Lousy service.

Dr. Wannenburg helped me identify a chronic disease I have had for decades and found causes for my symptoms which others had identified as reactions to stress. He is thorough, smart, thoughtful and conscientious. I understand what others are saying about his manner but I think he is a doctor who is very quick to 'process' the problem whether that means testing to figure out what is happening, or referring to a specialist once all obvious things are ruled out. If you go to him with a more complex issue, I recommend having concise notes and if you want someone to talk to for a while, he may not be your guy as he does seem to get anxious when an appointment runs long. The only 'complaint' I have, is that referrals seem to take a very long time from that office but I'm not sure what the average time or a reasonable time may be (I have no idea what the process consists of) so that may be an unfair comment - but I don't think I have had one processes sooner than 3 weeks and some were 4 or 5 weeks if I am remembering correctly. His front end staff is also excellent.

Dr. Wannenburg is a good listener but his examination is always very perfunctory and he generally just refers me for tests or writes a prescription without really checking me physically.

Dr. Wannenburg is a pleasant man and willing to listen but I never feel like he is thorough in his approach. After moving from Alberta where I had a very thorough family physician I feel like Dr. W. barely examines me when I go see him with an ailment. He sends me for a test or prescribes something so it's not like he ignores me but it seems odd that he barely examines me physically. I never have to wait for appointments but it's no wonder as the visits are so very short. I am not sure what to make of it.
