Dr. Darlene Buan-Basit Bio

Dr. Darlene Buan-Basit is a licensed chiropractor and Pilates instructor with over 18 years of experience in Toronto. Throughout her career, she has worked with a diverse range of individuals, including injured athletes, professional NHL players, babies, children, and active seniors. Dr. Buan-Basit's personal experience with her own baby's tongue tie led her to develop a strong interest in providing support and manual therapy treatment techniques for infants with tongue ties. She conducted research, took courses, and developed expertise in this area to better assist babies and their families. In addition to her specialization in tongue tie treatment, Dr. Buan-Basit is trained in various therapeutic modalities. She is proficient in Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Active Release Technique, Activator Methods, Cranial Sacral Therapy, Advanced Massage Techniques, and various myofascial release techniques. She is also certified and trained in movement therapies such as Pilates, yoga, Garuda, MELT, and Hypopressives Low Pressure Fitness, which she utilizes to help people improve their movement patterns. Dr. Buan-Basit collaborates closely with International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) to provide co-treatment for complex cases. She offers manual therapy to babies pre and post frenotomy and supports mothers with other breastfeeding issues. Dr. Buan-Basit's research, training, and clinical experience have led her to develop courses and publications, and she works collaboratively with IBCLCs, dentists, midwives, doulas, and occupational therapists to assist breastfeeding families. She is currently on the Board of the International Consortium of Ankylofrenula Professions, working towards promoting best practices globally for individuals with tongue ties. Before pursuing chiropractic, Dr. Buan-Basit earned a B.A.Sc Honors in Occupational Health and Safety with a minor in Human Resource Management. Her experience in the manufacturing industry inspired her to work directly with injured workers, leading her to enroll at the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, from which she graduated in 2003. Outside of her professional life, Dr. Darlene enjoys downhill skiing, cycling, swimming, snorkeling, yoga, and learning to play the harp.
