Treatment of Postpartum Psychiatric Conditions
Duration: 52 seconds

The types of treatments that we would use to treat psychiatric symptoms during the postpartum period would depend on what type of condition that we are trying to treat.

For instance, postpartum blues often could be treated with psychological treatments, whereas if a woman has a more serious condition, such as postpartum depression, mania or psychosis, those certainly would require treatment with medicines.

Psychiatric symptoms during the postpartum period should be treated immediately because, if not treated, the consequences could be quite substantial for the welfare of the mother as well as child. If you are in doubt, please make sure to speak with your family physician or a psychiatrist.
