One of the biggest questions around diet and nutrition is, ‘should I be eating white or brown bread?’ Asking this question is great because it shows that you're thinking about your overall health. We know that whole grains have the most nutrition but why should you be eating whole grains when you have kidney disease? Well, they actually provide nutrients like fiber, vitamins, minerals, much more compared to those refined grains like white bread or pasta because the entire part of the grain remains intact and that's where all the nutrients are.

Whole grains also contain iron, magnesium, selenium, as well as potassium and phosphorus which are still important when we have chronic kidney disease, just in moderation. When we have refined grains, these nutritional benefits are lost. Some of the most nutritious kidney friendly whole grains to include in your diet are things like barley, brown rice or oatmeal. These whole grains can fit into a kidney friendly diet and provide that added benefit of fiber. For example, you could add barley to a salad or soup or swapping brown rice in a stir fry. Oatmeal can be a great breakfast or a snack idea.

If you have questions about including a whole grains into your kidney diet, speaking with a local dietitian can help.
