The causes of sore throats are mainly viral or bacterial infections.
Viral infections are obviously treated symptomatically, as we know, whereas bacterial infections, like strep-throat, will need antibiotics. Other causes for sore throats are inhalations of toxic fumes like smoke, or from air conditioning.
Mouth breathing due to nasal obstruction, fungal infections that could be due to the use of asthma inhalers, as well as other viral infections like infectious mononucleosis can cause a sore throat.
A sore throat caused by a virus will be accompanied by other symptoms, like congestion, cough and fever. A sore throat caused by a bacterial infection will cause a more localized, more severe sore throat.
If you have questions about sore throats, contact a local physician.
