An obstetrician is a physician who has taken additional education and training in obstetrics, which is a surgical sub-specialty. An obstetrician usually works with women throughout their pregnancies, and/or in a hospital to treat women with complications during labour (performing surgeries such as caesarean sections). In treating patients an obstetrician can also educate patients on morning sickness, safe foods during pregnancy, pain management during labour, prenatal supplements and gestational diabetes.
