SPRING 2010 PRE-REGISTERED CLASSES

INTRODUCTION TO SANSKRIT

This 8-week course will introduce participants to the Sanskrit alphabet and basic elements of Sanskrit grammar and pronunciation. Proper pronunciation of Sanskrit words commonly heard in yoga classes and various chants will be developed through the chanting of fundamental sounds, names of yoga postures, and the opening and closing chants of Ashtanga yoga. This course is suitable for anyone from yoga student, yoga teacher, meditation practitioner, or the curious. This is a unique opportunity to further your understanding of yoga and its roots. Space is limited. Register early.

INTRODUCTION TO ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA

This 8-week session will introduce the postures and practice methods of Ashtanga yoga. Students will learn the basics of breathing, standing, and asanas (poses). Each class will build on the previous lesson as more postures are introduced and practice methods are refined. All levels of student, from beginner to teacher, will benefit from this course which will increase their knowledge of and ability to practice Ashtanga yoga.

TEEN YOGA

An 8-week session of yoga classes for teens, 13 to 19 years of age. Students can expect to increase coordination and flexibility, build strength and confidence, and enhance their ability to concentrate, stay focused, and manage anxiety.

MEDITATION AND CULTIVATING COMPASSION

During this 8-week course students will learn a simple method of Mindfulness meditation based on the observation of our natural breathing patterns. This is the same method used by the Buddha to attain enlightenment. The cultivation of compassion begins with the study and practice of the first two limbs of classical Ashtanga yoga, the ethical basis of yoga. Incorporating the five practices and five observances of this practice into our daily lives leads to a more compassionate and understanding outlook on life. Suitable for all levels.

GROUNDING THE BREATH

During this 8-week course participants will learn how to develop and maintain a steady rhythmic breathing pattern and through this, ground and expand their capacity for breath. Eastern and Western models of the anatomy and physiology of breathing will be discussed as are relevant to this practice. Equal parts breathing (samavritti pranayama) is the starting point for any breathing practice and is an excellent technique for stress and anxiety reduction, calming the mind and bringing stability and balance to ones yoga or meditation practice. This course is suitable for all levels, from beginner to teacher. All will benefit from learning this simple technique.
