Counselling and psychotherapy are often referred to as the "talking cure" as they involve in-depth conversations between the client and counsellor. Psychotherapy and counselling is a collaborative endeavor between the client and counsellor in which the client discusses their concerns, problems and challenges. It's a one-way relationship in which the needs of the client are first and foremost.

What's Involved in Counselling and Psychotherapy?

There are different degrees to psychotherapy and counselling. For example, counselling tends to have a more here-and-now focus, and is often quite brief, while psychotherapy tends to focus on deeper problems. Both types of intervention help clients who find themselves "stuck" and unable to experience changes they desire.

Although the counsellor or psychotherapist is the expert on normal psychological health and development and change, clients are considered to be the experts on their problems and how they feel and think. The therapist's job is to help the client understand the choices available to them and begin considering new possibilities. Of course there are many methodologies and techniques that therapists can draw from to help move forward.

Although a client's problems may be rooted in the past, psychotherapy aims to help the client see how they're experiencing problems now and what new possibilities may look like.
