Vein Treatments

Why do I have these veins?
Hereditary is the primary contributing factor for causing varicose and spider veins. Hormonal factors including puberty, pregnancy, menopause, the use of birth control pills and hormones such as estrogen and progesterone affect the disease. Varicose veins due to pregnancy often improve within three months after delivery. However, with successive pregnancies abnormal veins are likely to remain. Other predisposing factors include age, standing occupations, obesity and leg injury.

What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy can be used to treat both varicose and spider veins. A tiny needle is used to inject the vein with a medication that irritates the lining of the vein. In response the veins collapse and are reabsorbed leaving the veins no longer visible.

Sclerotherapy relieves leg pain and fatigue due to spider veins in most patients. With this procedure, veins can be dealt at an early stage helping to prevent further complications.

Ultrasound – Guided Sclerotherapy
This is an in-office treatment alternative to surgical stripping. With this technique, sclerotherapy is done while the doctor visually monitors the vein on an ultrasound screen. This enables the treatment of the veins that can't be seen because of their deeper location in the skin and would otherwise require surgical removal.

What is the recovery time?
Patients are able to return to work immediately after treatment. Compression stockings are applied post sclerotherapy for a duration dependant upon the severity of the disease.
