Depending on the operating surgeon, the party responsible for payment, and the complexity and urgency of a procedure, surgery may be performed in the office, in the Minor Surgery Clinic at one of the Calgary Health Regional hospitals, in the Main Operating Room at one of the Calgary Health Regional hospitals, or in a private surgical facility.
As with consultations, surgery is triaged according to its urgency, with acute traumatic cases and cancer cases always having priority. Indeed, it is sometimes necessary to cancel scheduled elective surgery to accommodate other patients with more urgent problems.
