Dr. Philippe Demers Bio

Dr. Demers received his Doctor of Medicine from Université de Montréal in 1995. He then did his residency program in cardiac surgery at Université de Montréal in 2001. During his residency, he also completed a master’s degree in biomedical sciences. Dr. Demers then received scholarships to complete a two-year fellowship at Stanford University under the supervision of Dr. D. Craig Miller. During this period, he developed an interest and expertise in the treatment and management of aortic disease (aneurysms, dissections, bicuspid aortic valve disease, Marfan's syndrome), particularly aortic root reconstruction using valve preservation, aortic dissection surgery, valve repair surgery, and the endovascular treatment of aortic disease. As a co-author, he has written over 60 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, over 50 scientific abstracts as well as 8 book chapters. He has been the education coordinator for the cardiac surgery residency program at Université de Montréal since 2008 and the coordinator of continuing professional development for the Association des chirurgiens cardiovasculaires et thoraciques du Québec and coordinator since 2010. He has been a member of the Department of Surgery at the Montreal Heart Institute and the Hôpital du Sacré-Cœur de Montréal and a professor in the Department of Surgery at Université de Montréal since 2003. He has operated on nearly 3,000 patients. He has vast experience in complex aortic and valvular procedures, and his current practice focuses on aortic surgery, aortic and mitral valve repair, valve reoperations, and the endovascular and transcatheter treatment of cardiovascular disease.
