Female Adult Acne

Featuring Dr. Tasha Bienert, MD

Duration: 1 minute, 22 seconds

Acne is an inflammatory condition that affects the skin.

It affects both women and men, and although it most commonly starts in the teenage years it can occur at any time in your life.

Acne is due to a P. acnes bacteria on the skin as well as some inflammation around the follicles. You have many options for acne treatment, and these can be initiated by your family physician.

Some of the major categories for a treatment include topical products and these often contain a topical antibiotiv to kill that P. acnes.

The next level of treatment would be oral antibiotics, again to target that P. acnes bacteria. Finally there is oral Accutane which is a vitamin A derivative, which also can be very effective in treating acne.

It's important to treat acne, whether its onset is in the teenage years or adult years, because acne can cause scarring of the skin. We still have no good treatment for scarring of the skin, so prevention is your best way to approach acne.

Your family physician is a good place to start for acne prevention. They can do investigations and initiate your treatment. For more difficult cases of acne, your family physician may refer you on to a dermatologist.

If you feel you may suffer from acne, please make sure you book an appointment with your family physician.
