Muscle Pulls

Featuring Jody Wiebe, BSc, MPT, Physiotherapist

Duration: 1 minute

A muscle pull or a muscle strain is when the muscle has been stretched passed the length of the muscle fibers and actual tearing of the muscle fibers occur.

Signs and symptoms include pain at the site of the pull as well as swelling and bruising depending on the severity. If the pull is significant enough or severe enough, then there can be limited range of motion at the joints that are connected to that muscle group.

For soccer players, at the time of the muscle pull it can be very painful, and depending on the degree of the pull, it can actually limit the ability to walk or bear weight on it. There may be significant swelling and/or bruising. If a snap or a pop is heard at the time of injury, it's indicative of a more severe muscle pull and that should be followed up by a visit to the physician or the physiotherapist as soon as possible.

If you have questions about muscle pulls in soccer, contact a local physiotherapist.
