Lap Band Procedure

For patients who are suffering from obesity, there is an operation that is performed called ôlap banding.ö

This is a technique that is completed by a general surgeon by which a band is placed around the entry to their stomach that is filled to prevent them from overeating. The lap band is adjusted by placing more or less saline in the band to allow the patient to eat more or less food. This has been proven to be extremely successful in helping patients lose weight.

The lap band is placed laparoscopically and the adjustments are done through a small valve that is underneath the skin in the abdominal area just underneath the ribcage. A small needle is put through the skin with a syringe that contains saline and it is filled or defiled meaning you remove some saline at various times again to allow the patient to eat more or less.

This has proven to be very successful. Patients are very comfortable with it and it has allowed them to sustain a weight loss for an extended period of time. There are very few risks with the lap band procedure, but there are some, which would include the inability to swallow comfortably and perhaps excess weight loss.

If patients are interested in pursuing this operation, they should go to their family physician and be referred to one of the centers that routinely perform the operation to ensure that they have the appropriate advise preoperatively and most importantly have the appropriate care postoperatively to ensure the lap band is being filled and defiled appropriately.
