Parenting - School Bullying

Featuring Lisa Bunnage, Parenting Coach

Duration: 1 minute

Boys will usually fight it out and then they'll have lunch together - it's no big deal.

Girls are vindictive and it will last for years. If they start picking on a girl in Grade 1 it will often go through right to Grade 12 - it can even go through college. It's amazing how long girls can hold a grudge, and they often forget where it even started. So you have to intervene early.

Remember that it's not just up to the school; it's not up to the teacher or the principal alone. It also requires the parents to get involved. And when it's off school grounds that is out of the school district's jurisdiction and there's nothing they can do about it.

There is the bully and then there's the victim and then there's the witness. There might be several witnesses. It's not up to the witness to solve this problem. It's not even up to the victim. It's really up to the bully to stop bullying, but the intervention should come from the adults and the children have to talk.

Certainly the victim has to be encouraged to talk and tell someone. And then responsible adults should work as a team to help the bully because the bully needs help.
