If you've been diagnosed with asthma, you may be wondering exactly what the disease is. Doctors define asthma as a chronic inflammatory disease of the airway. While the exact causes of asthma aren't known, experts believe it's caused by a combination of environmental and genetic factors. If left untreated, asthma can be a life threatening disease, but with the right asthma treatments, asthma symptoms can be reduced or eliminated. First, you need to avoid the specific irritants that are causing it. This may be smoke, perfume or dust.

There are also a number of asthma medications that can help. There are asthma inhalers, where you inhale the medication - these may be bronchodilators or anti-inflammatory medications. Because inhaled treatments for asthma go right to the lungs, they are very efficient. Controller medications are different in that they focus on the cause of the symptoms (inflammation in the airways) which don't work as quickly as relievers but work over time to relive symptoms.

Preventing Asthma and Respiratory Disease

The most important step to take if you have any respiratory disease to ensure that you're not smoking or exposing yourself to allergens. Stopping smoking is the best thing you can do for your health - smoking is the most common cause of cancer in men and women. If you are having trouble quitting smoking, there are resources to help you. Start with your family physician.
