Craniosacral Massage: Angela Mackenzie, RMT, discusses craniosacral massage therapy.

Craniosacral massage therapy is a gentle, non-invasive form of massage that uses a very light pressure. The craniosacral system is a physiological system in the body that consists of a three-layered membrane system, cerebrospinal fluid, structures to control the input and outflow of fluid, and related bones. The philosophy behind craniosacral massage therapy is that blockages can occur in our spinal fluid, causing imbalances in various parts of the body.

“Craniosacral therapy treats the cerebral spinal fluid, located in the cranial membranes, which are continuous with your spinal cord,” says Angela Mackenzie, a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) and HealthChoicesFirst.com partner.

What to Expect in a Craniosacral Massage Therapy Session

A massage therapist uses their fingers to balance the fluid in the head, neck and back with slight pressure during a craniosacral massage therapy session. Because the craniosacral system has a rhythm - the cranial rhythm - a massage therapist can tap into this and then focus on areas where further treatment is needed to help the body heal itself.

“Craniosacral therapy uses only five grams of pressure,” Mackenzie says. “But, it is very effective in helping anyone with conditions like chronic migraines or headaches, because it relieves the pressure and tension in these structures, which reduces the pain.”

The Benefits of Craniosacral Massage

Some of the other health conditions craniosacral massage therapy can treat are:

*Chronic back or neck pain (often due to computer injuries)
*Chronic fatigue
*Emotional distress - Visit our mental health video library
*Stress and tension

To get optimal results from craniosacral massage therapy, look for a qualified therapist who understands this massage technique.

“A massage therapist has to be skilled in craniosacral therapy to locate these tissues,” says Mackenzie.

While craniosacral massage therapy is safe for most conditions, clients with some pre-existing medical problems may not be suitable candidates. Talk to a massage therapist to find out if craniosacral massage therapy is right for you.
