Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to produce high quality images of various structures within the body, including soft tissues, bones and organs. A breast MRI is an important diagnostic imaging tool. Breast MRI scans are performed to provide further diagnostic information about a breast condition that can't be solved by other forms of imaging, such as mammography or breast ultrasound.
In conventional mammography, an X-ray is taken of the breast, and the radiologist looks at black and white images on film to interpret results. Digital mammography is similar, except images are stored electronically rather than on film. During an ultrasound, high frequency sound waves are transmitted through the breast using a handheld instrument, and echoes are picked up and translated into images on the computer screen.
How Breast MRI Scans Work
A breast MRI scan uses a combination of powerful magnetic and FM radio waves to create 3D images that can be manipulated and analyzed using computers. During a breast MRI, the patient lies on her front, with her breasts in a hollow on the table. As the table moves into the scanning machine, initial images are taken, then a contrast agent is given intravenously to help detect abnormalities. More images of the breasts are then taken, and after about an hour the MRI is complete. The radiologist has hundreds of detailed images taken from a variety of different angles to analyze. Canada Diagnostic Centres is the first facility in Canada to utilize CADstream™, a computer-aided detection system designed for breast MRI.

A breast MRI is a valuable tool for assessing potentially cancerous lesions and determining the extent of early breast cancer in order to formulate an optimal treatment plan. A breast MRI can provide detailed information about the size and location of a suspicious lesion, the location of the cancer or suspected cancer, and whether or not there are more lumps in the same breast or other breast.
