Botox and Dental Surgery: Dr. Perry Trester, DMD, FRCD (C), FADSA, FICD, FACD, discusses Botox.

Botox is best known for its widespread use in cosmetic surgery as a tool to smooth facial lines, especially between the brows. Botox is a non-surgical procedure that involves the injection of botulinum toxin A into the treatment area. The chemical causes temporary paralysis of the muscles, which remain relaxed for a period of time. Botox is useful in dental surgery. Many dentists and oral surgeons are using Botox in dental surgery and in treating dental conditions.

How Does Botox Work in Dental Surgery?

Botox and other dermal fillers are now being used by dentists to enhance the appearance of patients who have had surgical correction because of a deformity or trauma to the face. Botox works on a number of dental conditions as it relaxes the temporomandibular muscles that control the jaw.

Dental Conditions Botox Can Treat

Botox can be effective in treating TMJ Disorder, a condition that affects the temporomandibular joints, which connect the jawbone to the skull. TMJ Disorder can occur as a result of facial injury, arthritis, and teeth grinding (bruxism). Bruxism can cause damage to the teeth, jaw joint and bone, and Botox can alleviate the pain and pressure it causes by stopping muscles from clenching and grinding. Learn more from our bruxism video and article. Botox may also be used in dental implant surgery, in order to help the new implant fuse with your jaw bone. Since it works by relaxing the jaw, it reduces the stress placed on the new implant.

Botox is a temporary fix, which means you will have to repeat the treatment on a regular basis. The temporary nature of Botox in dental surgery makes it ideal; if the results you see are not satisfactory, they will fade in a short time.
