Q:

Why does heart disease risk increase with age?

A:

The risk of heart disease increases as our bodies age, primarily due to changes in the blood vessels which make the heart work harder. As we age and our arteries begin to harden, the heart has to compensate for this by pumping harder which can cause increased blood pressure and increase the chance of developing heart disease. See your family physician for regular check-ups to ensure you understand your heart disease risk status.

Q:

Do I have to get up at night to test my blood sugar?

A:

Most people with diabetes do not have to test their blood sugar levels through the night if their diabetes is well controlled. That being said, if you are taking certain medications which can cause your sugars to drop overnight, you may be asked to test more frequently. Your doctor can help advise you on when you should be testing your blood glucose levels.

Q:

What should I do to prepare for traveling with my diabetes?

A:

Before your trip, you should get a letter from your doctor outlining your diabetes and what you may be traveling with (needles, insulin, etc) to avoid any issues with security at the airport. You may want to ask for a prescription for your diabetes medications in case you lose them while away. Your doctor can tell you whether crossing times zones will impact when you take your insulin, and a summary of your medications is useful in case you need to seek medical attention while away.
